the IV studies can be a bit uneven- this one is very good for devotional study (as opposed to a scholarly or critical study). It actually goes pretty deep into the ramifications of what is being said, both for interpretation and application. While it does have a certain viewpoint about how the "hopelessness" of Ecclesiastes harmonizes with Christian hope (Jesus changes everything), it isn't too heavy handed about it, and if you've been a christian for any period of time you can kind of see it coming. It is a worthwhile investment for studying a book than can prove difficult.

This is a very good Bible study on Ecclesiastes, and I have found it helpful in leading a group Bible study. It seems as if the book is geared for college age and middle-aged people, and it is very appropriate for them. I gave it a 4 rating because the ladies I am studying with are seniors, and I felt they would not understand the wording of some of the questions and the line of thought behind them. That was fine, as the questions gave me good ideas for questions to ask and I was able to reword them so they were appropriate for my group. But the book as it is did not completely meet my needs. I would recommend it highly for college age and young adults, perhaps even for people getting close to retirement.

My group has just begun this study, so I cannot give a review for the entire book. So far it has been good in the questions we answer and discuss. I am not a fan of the NIV translation so use other translations, as well.

Used it for a personal study. It is well done, some of the questions are repetitive.The insight in the back would be helpful if I decided to lead a group through this material

Bernt Sigve Aadnoy is a Professor of the Petroleum Engineering Department at the University of Stavanger in Norway. His extensive career includes working for Phillips, Rogaland Research Institute, Statoil, and independent consultant work for many oil companies, including being an advisor for the Petroleum Safety Authority since 2003. Professor Aadnoy holds a Mechanical Engineers degree from Stavanger Tech, a BSc in mechanical engineeering from the University of Wyoming, a M.S. degree in control engineering from the University of Texas, and PhD in petroleum rock mechanics from the Norwegian Institute of Technology. He has authored more than 130 publications, mostly within drilling and rock mechanics but also within reservoir engineering and production. He holds 7 patents. Professor Aadnoy is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences. he has received numerous awards over the years, including being the 1999 recipient of the SPE International Drilling Engineering Award and an Honorary Membership Award in 2015 for his dedicated service to SPE.Reza Looyeh is a registered Chartered Engineer, a Fellow member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineeres (IMechE) in the UK, and a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He holds a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from Tehran University, Iran (1989, Honors Degree), an MSc from Newcastle University, UK, in offshore engineering (1994), and PhD from Durham University, UK, in mechanical engineering (1999). He is presently a lead mechanical engineer at Chebron Pembroke Refinery in the UK, a position he has held since 2006. Dr. Looyeh has over 25 technical publications on a variety of topics and is a member of the Engineering Equipment and Material User's Association (EEMUA), Piping Systems Committee (PSC), and Materails Technology Committee (MTC), as well as an industrial advisor to IMechE for the oil and gas sector.

Great book for any petroleum engineer, grad or undergraduated student. The books covers the main aspects of the subject within a very clean and organized approach, and brings excercises in the end of the chapters that helps to fix the contents.

In a captivating account of sport diving, Chowdhury chronicles the tragedy of Chris and Chrissy Rouse, an energetic father-son dive team who met with disaster while attempting to explore a German U-boat 230 feet deep in the waters off New York. Conway reads with a raspy voice and dark intonation, and he revels in bringing alive the book's dramatic moments, such as when Chrissy slithers through cold, murky waters inside the submarine's cramped hull. Though highly competent in perilous underwater cave diving, the Rouses lacked experience on the open sea, leaving them unprepared for a cruel convergence of deadly circumstances. Aside from telling the Rouses' story, Chowdhury does an excellent jobAreinforced by Conway's audio skillsAof introducing listeners to the history, equipment and dangers of diving at extreme depth. The streamlined audio abridgment omits some of this information, along with a handful of alluring anecdotes, but it also does away with some of the obsessive personal details of the Rouses that occasionally bogged down Chowdhury's narrative. Though this makes for a few clumsy moments (the tape mentions, for instance, how Chrissy had once saved his father's life, yet the story of the machine-shop explosion to which it refers has been edited out), its overall effect is to create a crisp storyline that listeners will appreciate. While several countries have their advocates, and we'll likely never know for sure, Georgia currently has the strongest claim. Begos explores their ancient varietals and their rediscovery of qvevri, clay amphorae without handles, as vessels for wine making. He also notes the spread of such vessels beyond Georgia. (I have California wines made in amphorae.)He further explores the role and evolution of yeast, the other key ingredient besides grapes for making wine. This includes the choice between native and commercial yeasts, a matter of disagreement among wine makers.In addition to being an exploration of the history of wine it is also an exploration of wine beyond the handful of grapes that dominate the global industry, and what we lose if we neglect them. It is interesting that publication of this book follows so closely after Godforsaken Grapes, which is also about neglected grapes. While I enjoyed them both, they are quite different books. The author of the earlier book was searching for variety, and his book is very much about himself and his quest. This book is written by a journalist, and while the author is certainly a subject in his book the focus is less on him and more on history. Which book you like better will depend on which style and focus is of more interest to you. And there is nothing wrong with liking them both.I was provided a copy for review by the publisher, but have ordered a copy of the final version for my library.

I'm generally suspicious of first person accounts masquerading as "hard" non-fiction reality. Where one expects a serious presentation of facts, figures and background, the usual substitute is a series of opinions and impressions, often of little or no provable value. And Begos is, at first, that suspect first person narrator. However, he keeps himself in the game throughout, never opting out but digging even deeper into the subject of the origins of wine and the increasingly lost diversity of wine grape varieties. He engages the right people (Patrick McGovern, José Vouillamoz and others) and combines it with ongoing real experiences backed by intelligent commentary and observation. While the book is somewhat light on the science of flavor he does pursue the search for the origins of wine, effectively dismissing the specious concept of "noble" grapes and their superiority. An excellent read for anyone who questions the past and future of what we pour into our glasses.

This is a very interesting premise for a book on wine. The author set out on a ten-year journey to discover the origins of wine with some varieties of grapes going back thousands of years. This book is part history, part science, part travelogue, part buyers list. I particularly like that the author includes "tastings" at the end of some chapters providing information on where these more obscure wines can be found in the U.S. It will be fun to try wines other than the dozen or so that are currently popular. I think this book would make a unique gift for any adventurous wine lover.
